The presidential line of rolex was started in 1956. The watch makes a bold statement on the hand. The watch became popular after addition of the concealed clasp.
The first model (6511) lasted around an year and was replaced by a similar model 6611. This newer model featured the new calibre 1055 movement with its free sprung Micro-Stella balance and was the first to be labeled "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" on the dial. This set the new accuracy standards in watches.
With only a few design changes over the years the first modification to the President watch was the addition of the hack feature in 1972. This allows the second hand to be stopped if you wanted to set the time via a preset accurate source. At this time the shape of the head was essentially the same as it is today. The President watch was available in white gold, yellow gold, pink gold and platinum.
The inclusion of the sapphire crystal gives the watch a sleeker look and also adds to the durability of the watch. The sapphire crystal fitted tighter makes the watch glass scratch proof.
